You can get them in various diameters. To answer your question, though, yes. They tend to come in larger diameters and smaller lengths to allow maximum flow once you cum.
Sounding rods come in a wide range of lengths, diameters and shapes. Some websites that sell them even have a sizing charts that recommend sizes based on your penis size. Shapes range from just a simple straight rod, to beaded, etc. I would suggest starting with a simple straight rod and work your way up after that if you like it. Yes Neonaught, the hollow glass sounding tubes are mainly used in fertility clinics to collect sperm specimens, and I wouldn't ever recommend using a hollow glass tube for recreational use.
